If you’ve owned your home for any length of time, you may be wondering how often you need to replace the shingles on your roof.

While there is no standard answer that fits every home, here are a few simple signs that let you know it’s time to have roofers replace the shingles on your home.

1. When they are worn out.

Our roofs go through a lot of wear and tear through the seasons. Year after year they face damaging obstacles such as wind, rain, hail, snow and sun damage just to name a few. As nature continues to run its course, your shingles can wear out. At this point, it’s time to replace them.

2. When they don’t have any more granules on them.

The granules are what do the heavy lifting of the shingle. They’re what allow them to fend off the elements. These are gradually worn down and washed away over time. When you see patches of shingles on which the granules are missing, it may be time to call a construction company for a consultation.

3. When they are ripped, torn, dented, or have holes in them.

Sometimes hail or other damaging forces can cause damages to shingles on your roof. When this happens, you may need to repair the affected area by replacing the shingles. A professional can then look at the status of the rest of your roof and advise as to whether or not a full replacement of shingles is necessary.

4. When they are causing leaks into the house.

If you notice water spots forming on the ceiling of your room or hear dripping coming from above, it’s a strong indication that there are leaks in your roof. At this point, it is wise to contact a professional to advise and repair as necessary.

5. When you want a new color.

Sometimes there’s may not be anything wrong with the shingles themselves so much as you’re ready for a new look. Shingles come in a variety of colors and patterns and you may want to change the look of your home by changing the shingles.
